It was difficult to find a person in Rio de Janeiro between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th who did not know Circo Spinelli – and, above all, its biggest attraction, Benjamin de Oliveira. The clown, acrobat, instrumentalist, playwright, producer and actor was one of the most popular artists in the capital of the country. He was the first Brazilian black clown. There are those who argue that it was the first in the world.
Born in Pará de Minas in the state of Minas Gerais in 1870, he ran away from home at age 12 to follow Circo Sotero. In the ring, he learned the arts of trapeze and acrobatics. Then he migrated to other circuses and, taking advantage of the fact that one of the clowns had become ill, took his place.
Over time, Benjamin began to develop his own shows. He is considered one of the precursors of circus theater in the country. He wrote plays such as Vingança Operária, Matutos da Cidade and A Noiva do Sargento. He even staged Shakespeare in the ring. Among his admirers were the playwright Artur de Azevedo and the president Floriano Peixoto.
Benjamin also recorded seven albums, gave space for Catulo da Paixão Cearense to perform and, in 1908, directed the short film Os Guaranis, one of the first films in Brazilian cinema.
“It was the boldest example of black-American-European cultural fusion ever attempted anywhere in the world”, exalts rigorous researcher José Ramos Tinhorão about a piece by the artist. Benjamin did his antics until 1947, when he retired from the ring at the age of 77.
