"I have a dream. The dream of seeing my children judged by character, not skin color.” This is an excerpt from Martin Luther King's famous speech in Washington, capital of the United States, delivered on August 28, 1963, in a demonstration that brought together thousands of people for the end of prejudice and discrimination racial.
Martin Luther King Jr. was the son and grandson of Baptist Protestant ministers. He took his first studies in segregated public schools and graduated from the prestigious Morehouse College in 1948.
He received a bachelor's degree in theology from Crozer Theological Seminary and, in 1955, a doctorate in philosophy from Boston University. There he met his future wife, Coretta Scott, with whom he had four children.
In 1954, Martin Luther King began his activities as a pastor in Montgomery, capital of the state of Alabama. Getting involved in the incident where Rosa Parks refusing to give up his seat to a white man on a bus, King led a strong boycott against racial segregation. The movement lasted almost a year, King was arrested, but in the end the Supreme Court decided to end racial segregation in public transport.
In 1957, he became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, intensifying his role as a civil rights advocate through peaceful means, with the Indian leader as a reference. Mahatma Gandhi.
In 1959, King returned to Atlanta to become vice pastor at his father's church. In the following years, he participated in countless protests, marches and marches, always fighting for the civil liberties of blacks.
The most important events took place in the cities of Birmingham, Alabama, St. Augustine, Florida, and Selma, also Alabama. Luther King was arrested and tortured several times, and his house was even attacked by bombs.
In 1963, Martin Luther King got more than 200,000 people to march to end racial segregation in Washington. On this occasion, he delivered his best-known speech, “I Have a Dream”. These demonstrations gave rise to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
In 1964, Martin Luther King received the Nobel Prize of Peace. In early 1967, King joined the movements against the Vietnam War. In April 1968, he was gunned down by an opponent at a hotel in the city of Memphis, where he was in support of a garbage collectors' strike.
