Read this excerpt from the novel St Bernard, written by Graciliano Ramos:
Magdalene's voice continues to caress me. What does she say? She naturally asks me to send some money to Mestre Caetano. This irritates me, but the irritation is different from others, it is an old irritation, which makes me completely calm. Madness to be a person at the same time angry and calm. But I am like this. Angry at whom? Against Master Caetano. Even though he's dead, I think it's good he goes to work. Boss!
St Bernard. Rio de Janeiro: Record, 1983.
