A chemical used in police investigations is luminol. Created in 1929 by O. H. Albrecht, luminol is able to react with the iron present in the blood. When it comes in contact with this chemical, the blood glows a fluorescent blue color. With the use of black light, the glare can be seen more clearly.
While phenolphthalein reacts to basic pH, luminol reacts with the iron present in the blood. Therefore, the result is more secure. However, it also has its drawbacks and is not 100% reliable. Some bleach causes luminol to react, and if a crime scene is cleaned with one of these products, the evidence will be masked by the bleach.
In addition, luminol also reacts with feces and traces of blood present in urine. Thus, if feces or urine are present, the blood can be camouflaged and not be detected by investigators. Even so, luminol is very useful in police investigations.
