Drums roll! Today there is marmalade, yes sir! He also has attentive eyes, wide smiles and lots of applause. It's the circus in action! Place of joy and fun. One of the oldest arts in the world, which originated among traveling peoples.
With a circular structure and covered with canvas, the traditional circus is usually made up of families. In the ring, there is no lack of clowns' confusions, fire-breathers, trapeze artists, the magician's illusions. Also noteworthy are the numbers of tamers who command lions, elephants and make monkeys act.
These days, however, there is a movement called the New Circus. He combines traditional circus juggling and acrobatics with dance and theater techniques. The presentations feature light effects, music and multicolored clothes. In this new trend in circus art, there is no longer the presence of animals.
Circus styles vary, but the important thing is to keep a show of joy, magic and fantasy as a form of entertainment.

CIRCUS CHILD SPENDS HIS LIFE TRAVELING

Circus artists travel through cities to present shows. He lives in a house called a trailer, which is trapped behind a car. The trailer is parked where the circus is set up. Circus kids start work early. When they're not at school or rehearsing, they play on the ground where the circus is parked.

At the Vostok circus, before the show, they sell popcorn and soft drinks. They get part of the money they make from sales.

The youngest trapeze artist in the world worked at the great Circo Popular do Brasil. Besides being the best in the trapeze, Serginho Vieira, 9, does acrobatics. Diego Esbano, 13, who worked at the Beto Carrero circus, runs a noose of fire and blows out candles with a whip. He says he likes this job.

STUDYING IS DIFFICULT

A law requires schools to accept children who live in circuses at any time during school hours. They find it difficult to keep up with classes and teachers so different in just one year of class. Jenifer Camargo, 5, dances dressed as a clown at the Vostok circus.

She says she loves living in the circus, but misses her friends from other schools.

The great circus Popular do Brasil has teachers who give extra classes for those who cannot study alone. The children do their homework together in the trailer.

Circo Popular also has preschool for children aged 2 to 6 years.

Leaflet, Aug. 1994.
