In addition to being thin, it also makes you smarter and lowers your blood pressure. A success. Blame it on the popular cocoa flavonoids. But these compounds are not always the same – and until then, scientists still didn't know which flavonoid was responsible for the health benefits.
This answer was pursued by a group of researchers at Virginia Tech University. They separated rats into groups and each followed a diet based on a different cocoa component for 12 weeks. And it became evident that those fed oligomeric procyanidins maintained their weight, even on a high-calorie diet, and were at less risk for diabetes.
