O P. brasiliensis is part of a group called Spelaeogriphacea (or speleogriphaceans), formed by only four species that still exist, and, of these, this species is the only one existing in Brazil and the first to be studied in a natural environment and in laboratory.
The distribution of the speleogryphaceans in the world indicates that these crustaceans were widespread in the ancient continent Gondwana, when the planet had only two blocks of land.
But Gondwana fragmented approximately 150 million years ago, and the speleogriffae that are known today are isolated by oceans.
