When Baby Jesus was born, all the children were happy.
Children, men, women came to see him, bringing gifts poor or rich.
Near the stable, where Baby Jesus slept, in a straw cradle, there were three trees: a palm, an olive and a pine.
Seeing those people coming and going, passing under its branches, the three trees also wanted to give something to Baby Jesus:
_ I'll give my biggest and most beautiful palm so she can shake the Baby. said the palm tree.
_I will squeeze my olives, the oil will serve to soften your hair. _said the olive tree.
_And I? What can I give? _asked the pine tree.
_You? _ replied the others _ You have nothing to give. Its sharp needles could skewer Baby Jesus.
The poor pine tree felt very unhappy and replied sadly:
_Yes, you are right. I have nothing to offer...
An angel was nearby, overheard the conversation and felt sorry for the pine tree so humble, so sad, that he could do nothing because he had nothing.
There in the sky, little stars began to shine.
The cute little angel looked up and called to them.
At the same moment, they descended willingly and went to stand on the branches of the modest pine tree, which was all lit up!
There in the crib, inside the stable, Baby Jesus' eyes shone when he saw that tree so beautiful!
And that's why people, even today, decorate the pine tree with lights on Christmas Eve.

Beto really wanted to have a Christmas tree.
It was his dream. A big tree, like the one in Carlinhos' house. But Beto's father couldn't buy it.
Every year he promised, but every year something happened and he could never give the tree to Beto.
One day, Beto had an idea. There on our street there is an empty lot, a vacant lot. Beto decided to plant a tree there and wait until it grew.
He cleared a piece of land… He got some fertilizer with Mr. Alexandre, the gardener…
He bought a tiny little pine seedling… And he planted it in the field.
Every day, Beto watered his seedling. He turned the earth around, took out the dry twigs, watched for ants not to come up. He took care of the plant as if it were a little people.
And the plant grew strong and beautiful.
I don't know how long Beto took care of that plant. It took a long time… Until Beto's tree was big, full of branches, a beauty! Ready to become a Christmas tree. (Ruth Rocha)
