The municipality of Calçoene, in Amapá, was identified as the wettest place in Brazil, with an average annual rainfall of 4,165mm. This means, for example, that between January and July – the region's rainy season – each month has about 25 days of rain. This finding was possible thanks to the crossing of data gathered by the network of pluviometric stations, managed by the National Water Agency (ANA).
Daniel Pereira Guimarães, forestry engineer at Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, analyzed the historical series of precipitation in different parts of the country. “A historical series concentrates 30 years of data collection. This time is the minimum considered reliable for statistical analysis”, explains the researcher. According to him, Calçoene only reached this level a short time ago, which may be one of the explanations for which the municipality did not appear, in previous analyses, as one of the rainiest places in the parents. “In addition, the data is now more consistent as it is being revised. This is necessary because they are numbers relative to thousands of stations, noted down in fields by researchers and then computerized. In this process some numbers may be confused, a letter may not be well understood. These are common mistakes, but they are being fixed.”
The previous rainfall record belonged to the region of Ubatuba, in the Serra do Mar paulista, between Paranapiacaba and Itapanhaú, with an average annual rainfall of 3,600mm. In Calçoene, the volume of rain is equivalent to three times that verified in the city of São Paulo.
