The fires, which intensified two weeks ago, will increase the climate crisis because of carbon emissions from burning organic matter. Affected areas will be more vulnerable to droughts, floods and other effects of climate change due to the lack of vegetation cover.
Loss of forest will also reduce the carbon dioxide absorption capacity of ecosystems.
The generation and dispersion of smoke compromise the air quality of several regions close to fires and also more distant cities, such as what was experienced in São Paulo.
The immediate impact of fires on biodiversity causes the death of thousands of animals and plants that inhabit the forest, among them emblematic species such as the jaguar, but also the loss of habitat for the species. survivors.
Likewise, fires cause serious social, economic and public health problems. The livelihoods of small local producers and indigenous peoples are threatened by the advance of the flames. The Chiquitana indigenous community of Santa Mônica, Bolivia, is one of the most affected: it lost more than R$240,000 in profit from working with sustainable wood.
The increase in fires and deforestation generates a decrease in evapotranspiration from the Amazon forest and, consequently, the decrease of flying rivers, responsible for most of the rains that occur in the continent.
It is worth remembering that the Amazon has trees that are more than 100 years old, therefore, fires have an incalculable impact. Recovering what was lost would take decades. Forest self-regeneration is a long-term process.
Water is also at risk, as forests are the main sources of this resource and are responsible for supplying the sources that ultimately carry water to cities.
The combined effects of deforestation and climate crisis could lead to a loss of up to 58% of forest species by 2050.
