É Fix or fix? If you're a musician, you'll fix it. If you're a technician, you'll fix it. The two words are almost identical and separated by only one letter in their spelling, but completely different in meaning.

They are characterized as homophone words, a phenomenon you will learn more about below:

Fix or fix: know the difference between verbs

To repair

The verb “repair” refers to every act of repairing. There are many synonyms in the Portuguese language: repair, fix, solve, solve, correct. It's whatever is being put in order, for example. Check out some examples:

  • I'm going to fix that door today.
  • Was it too expensive to fix your car?
  • If getting it fixed doesn't solve it, we'll need to change it.

  • The computer was sent in for repair.

The origin of the verb is from the Latin “fixare”, so, following the logic, it is also written with an “s”. Words like “fix”, cognate to it, also follow the same logic.

Check the conjugation of the verb "fix" in the Present Indicative:

  • (I) fix
  • (You) fix
  • (He) fixes
  • (we) fix
  • (you) mend
  • (they) fix

  • We need to work out the details at the next meeting.

  • (I) concert
  • (You) concerts
  • (He) fixes
  • (we) fixed
  • (you) concert
  • (they) fix

homophony

You may wonder: why does a word with the same speech have two different forms of spelling? This case is justified by the phenomenon of homophone words. In Portuguese, these words have the same phonetics, but different meanings and writings. This is what happens between "fix" and "fix".
