Amos and Boris invited me to embark on the subtlety of their friendship since the encounter with the cover. The play of colors between the title/author and the sun/whale is intelligent and the painting is light with a good line. sketch of the mouse and the whale together and serene urges us to discover who of them is Amos and who is the Boris.
From the illustration I already assumed the book was old and went to the last page to read about the author. There we found what we wanted to know, nothing more, nothing less. We found out who William Steig is, what he did and how important he was in his time. The book is from 1971. So I go back to the beginning and rediscover the work, now with a more precious look.
In a subtle and adventurous way, Steig narrates, in a constant dialogue between image and text, the friendship of the two mammals that is only possible due to accidents and occasional encounters that life give them. Without underestimating the reader, on the contrary, scientifically instigating him with the laws of biology and natural events, the characters tell us about the impossible friendship they create. Subversive and dangerous friendship, but at the same time it must, in the end, be submitted to the laws of nature.
One cannot live on the sea, nor the other on dry land. This is an end that we understand to be the hard truth and that we cannot escape from. On the penultimate page, when the two friends say goodbye with tears in their eyes, we also find ourselves hurting inside. Unable to sustain the emotion of separation, we soon looked for the next page, but there is only the encouragement of the realization of human helplessness. We found the mouse alone on the blank page, looking far into space; an emptiness of longing, which is so present that it talks to the sadness that I also feel.
