The human being, at the time he created the ability to grow his own food, was based on the stars like the sun and the moon to succeed in his farming.
And also the notion of time was made through these stars. With that, he started a research that is under constant observation to understand the universe.
The first conclusion was that the sun and planets revolve around the sun. This model was called the Geocentric Model. It presented flaws that encouraged other researchers to find perfection.
Astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in the 16th century developed a heliocentric model where the sun is at the center of the universe and the planets have circular orbits around them.
As early as the 17th century, astronomer, mathematician and astrologer Johanes Kepler showed laws governing the planetary system and used astronomer Tycho Brahe's notes to formulate his study.
He created three laws:

1st – Law of orbits
The planets have elliptical orbits around the sun that occupies one of the ellipse's focuses.
2nd – Kepler's Law – Law of Areas
The system that joins the sun to a planet has equal areas at equal time intervals.
3rd – Law of periods
Knowing that the translation movement of a planet is equivalent to the time it takes to make a turn around the sun.
The conclusion is that the farther away from the sun, the further away will be the translation time of this planet, which prolongs its year.
