Itatiaia National Park

Unsurprisingly, Brazilian forests have been destroyed since the country was discovered by the Europeans, more than 500 years ago. But the concern with the preservation of natural resources in Brazil is almost as old as their exploration. Did you know?

In the 18th century, for example, the position of Conservative Judge of the Forests was created in colonial Brazil. Documents from that time also prove the Portuguese Crown's concern with the conservation of the Atlantic Forest, such as a Royal Charter from 1797, which states that it is "necessary to take all precautions for the conservation of forests in the State of Brazil, and to prevent them from being ruined and destroyed […]”. It saw?

Unfortunately, these conservation ideas took many years to be taken seriously. For this reason, a large part of the original Atlantic Forest was destroyed, having to give way to cities, industries and farms. It was only in the 20th century that we began to realize the importance of preserving the remaining stretches of this exuberant Brazilian forest.

It was then that, exactly 80 years ago, a large area of the Atlantic Forest was chosen for the creation of the first national park do Brasil: The Itatiaia National Park, located on the southern part of the border between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Today, it protects an important stretch of the mountain range known as Serra da Mantiqueira.

One of the main features of the park is its relief. Itatiaia is an indigenous term that means something like “stone with points”. The park got its name from the many peaks in that region. In the park, there is, for example, the Pico das Agulhas Negras, one of the highest in Brazil, with an altitude of 2,800 meters. In these higher parts of the park, the forest gives way to undergrowth, called fields of altitude, where the winter is so harsh that temperatures can be as low as 10 degrees during the night! Below, extensive areas of tropical forest, with lush vegetation, surround the park.

From the combination of mountains and forests, what usually happens is the existence of abundant water. There are so many streams, waterfalls and natural pools that Itatiaia became known as “water castle”. A castle that houses another impressive wealth: around 1,500 species of plants, 5,000 insects, 50 mammals and 400 birds! In fact, the park is one of the best places to practice bird watching tourism in the world!
