A physician from Rio de Janeiro, Antônio Cardoso Fontes stood out for his studies on tuberculosis. One of the first researchers in Manguinhos, he specialized in Germany and Paris, in the laboratory of Calmette, one of the creators of the vaccine against this disease.
He fought yellow fever in São Luís and organized health services in the capital of Maranhão. With the death of Carlos Chagas, he assumed the direction of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute. Founder and first President of the Brazilian Society of Tuberculosis, he was also one of the founders of Faculty of Medical Sciences of Rio de Janeiro, where he was a professor of Microbiology and his first Principal.
