Irapuru – the corner that enchants

A certain young man, not very handsome, was admired and desired by all the girls of his tribe for playing the flute wonderfully well. They then named him Catuboré, enchanted flute. Among the girls, the beautiful Mainá got her love; they would marry in the spring.

One day, close to the big day, Catuboré went fishing and never returned.

As the whole tribe went looking for him, they found him lifeless, in the shade of a tree, bitten by a poisonous snake. They buried him on the spot.

Mainá, disconsolate, spent several hours mourning her great loss. Catuboré's soul, feeling his bride's suffering, mourned deeply for his misfortune. Unable to find peace, she asked the God Tupa for help. The latter then transformed the young man's soul into the irapuru bird, which, even with little beauty, has a wonderful song, similar to the sound of the flute, to cheer Mainá's soul.

The singing of the irapuru still infects other birds and all beings in nature with its love.
