Reducing the pollution caused by aerosols – particles suspended in the atmosphere, composed mainly of soot and sulfur – can backfire enormously.
A study by British and German researchers revealed that aerosols actually held back global warming. That's because they bounce sunlight into space, stimulating the formation of clouds (which also act as barriers to the sun's energy).
It is still difficult to quantify the exact influence of aerosols on this entire process, but the most optimistic estimates indicate that without them, global temperature could rise by 4º C by 2100 - the pessimists speak of an increase of up to 10º, which would put us “in” a barbecue grill. As aerosols can cause respiratory illnesses, the only way to fight the rise of thermometers is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the real villain of the story.
