Interpretation of the text, “Mangrove at risk”, which draws attention to the need to preserve the mangrove, considering the importance of this ecosystem. Aimed at students in the 1st year of high school, the activity is made up of several questions that address the theme and, above all, the linguistic resources used in the construction of the text, among them, the figure of language.

Understand the importance of this ecosystem and know why it must be preserved
Have you ever seen a mangrove swamp? Found in tropical coastal regions of Brazil and the world, this ecosystem is home to several species and, unfortunately, its existence is threatened by climate change. To get to know it better and try to preserve it, a team of researchers from the State University of Rio de Since 1994, Janeiro (UERJ) has been studying the Guaratiba mangrove, which is 70 kilometers from the center of the capital. From Rio.
Since then, researchers have discovered that the mangrove swamp has been suffering sharply from the impacts of changing climate, which sometimes brings periods of heavy rain, sometimes brings long periods of drought. During wet periods, mangrove vegetation tends to grow, but in times of drought, the opposite happens and the mangrove eventually shrinks.
The problem is that, although most mangroves are on the water's edge, there are also those that are not on the banks of seas or rivers and suffer less flooding from the tides. In this case, in times of drought, the situation is even more serious, as they depend totally on rainwater and, if it doesn't come for a long period, the mangrove can even die.
Another factor that worries researchers is the rise in sea levels. Considered a transitional ecosystem, the mangrove is located in the division between the terrestrial and and, if the sea level rises too much, the vegetation can suffocate and be forced to migrate to the continent. inside.
“The mangrove needs to adapt as the water level rises,” says oceanographer Mário Soares, who coordinates the Center for Mangrove Studies (Nema) at UERJ. “The mangrove in Guaratiba, for example, has expanded about 100 meters inland since 1998.”
The big problem is that not all mangroves have a place to escape to. Some are close to urban areas, while others end up encroaching on other ecosystems. As the scenario is not very optimistic, the tendency is that the mangroves will have to move inland more and more to survive. […]
