An underground journey in the midst of natural beauty is a guaranteed adventure for those visiting the Maquiné Grotto, located in the city of Cordisburgo, 120 km from Belo Horizonte. The cave, discovered in 1825 by farmer Joaquim Maria Maquiné, Seu Maquiné, is considered the cradle of Brazilian paleontology and has seven halls with beautiful architectural forms, sculpted by the work of water for millennia.
The scientific exploration of the site was carried out by the Danish Peter Wihelm Lund, almost a decade after the discovery on Seu Maquiné's farm. He made pilgrimages through the Rio das Velhas basin in search of species of animals and plants. During two years of research, the botanist and zoologist discovered human and animal remains prehistoric origins from the Quaternary period, which corresponds to the Cenozoic Era of the time scale geological. Among them, fossilized bird skeletons with curvatures of up to three meters.
Gruta do Maquiné became a tourist attraction in the land of writer Guimarães Rosa because it houses, over 650 meters, beautiful natural sculptures and stalactites of various shapes on the cave's ceiling. The open area for visitors, approximately 400 meters long, is strategically lit to highlight the figures drawn by time. The tour through the cave is done by safe walkways and is accompanied by a local guide.
The salons and galleries delight and spark the tourist's imagination. In the Hall of the Bear or the Elephant, for example, a large mushroom resembles the shape of an atomic bomb explosion. In the Galeria das Fadas, you can find shiny crystals, similar to fringes, wreaths and chandeliers.
