If you like birds and want to learn more about the subject, this e-book is worth checking out. Unlike a field guide, which is made up of species files sorted according to the taxonomic classification, “Flying around” reveals the diversity of birds that can be found in an urban park while discussing aspects of their lives animals, such as food, cleaning the plumage, caring for the offspring, predators… A light reading, but without losing rigor scientific. And that is available for download for free!
One hundred and ninety-one photographs (yes, I counted) illustrate a variety of activities performed by birds. Some snapshots are very interesting, such as a white woodpecker attacking a wasp nest (page 23), a robin regurgitating a seed (page 28), a little punch using a piece of bread as fish bait (page 39), a ticker removing parasites from the skin of a capybara (page 46), a small bee foraging in the nostrils of a carijó hawk (page 48), and the yawn of an urutau (page 75).
The book is the result of years of study and hundreds of hours of observations made by Giulia B researchers. D'Angelo and Ivan Sazima. In fact, its full title is “Flying around: The natural history of birds in an ecological park in the urban area of Campinas, Southeastern Brazil”. As it is a publication about birds found in an urban area (the study was done in Prof. Hermógenes de Freitas Leitão Filho, near Unicamp), almost all of the mentioned species can be easily seen by an attentive observer.
Giulia and Ivan are also authors of the guide “Aves do Campus da Unicamp and Surroundings”, in which the same care is observed in portraying the natural history of birds that live in cities. Publications such as these are of great relevance, as they highlight the importance of green areas as a refuge for urban wildlife, which is often neglected.
