Discovering a new species of bird is an increasingly rare event. In this book, biologist Marcos Rodrigues tells us at first hand how the recent discovery of the prickly stone mason, a small bird that belongs to the João-de-barro family, took place. The animal was discovered in 2007, but it was only recognized by science in 2012, after the publication of the description of the species in a specialized magazine.
Named by ornithologists with the scientific name Cinclodes spinacensis, the stone mason soon aroused the researchers' curiosity. This is because it is found only in a small portion of Serra do Espinhaço, in Minas Gerais, far from the area of occurrence of other species of its genus. How had he ended up there?
To answer this question, Marcos Rodrigues takes us on a trip through South America, with mandatory stops, where we are presented to other species of stonemasons that inhabit the continent, almost always in inhospitable environments and under climatic conditions extremes.
“(…)Cinclodes are terrestrial birds that feed on the ground, often associated with habitats close to water. Some of these species live in the most extreme environments in South America, such as the icy ones. gorges of the Andes, or in places of constant howling winds, or even in the dry deserts of the Atacama.” (page 55)
The book is also a journey into the past, linking discoveries made by distinguished scientists […] with the biogeographic enigma that surrounded the stone mason.
But what about the dirty thrush? The title of the book reveals the confusion generated by the first sightings of the stone mason, at the time completely unknown to ornithologists. Initially, some thought it was a simple wild thrush, covered in red earth.
