Pan, a rural deity

According to Greco-Roman mythology, Pan or Pan is the god of woods and fields, of flocks and shepherds. He lived in caves, roamed the mountains and valleys and amused himself by hunting or directing the dances of the nymphs (deities of rivers, woods, forests and fields). A lover of music, he invented the avena, a flute, which he played exemplarily.

Pan was feared by all those who had to cross the woods at night, for the darkness and solitude of these places predisposed people to fears and superstitions. Hence, fears devoid of apparent cause were attributed to Pan and called panic.

Thomas Bulfinch. "The Golden Book of Mythology". Rio de Janeiro: Gold, 1967.
