The pitomba (scientific name: Talisia esculenta), also known as bull's eye, forest pitomba and monkey pitomba, is the fruit of pitombeira, a tree that can reach more than 10 meters in height. Its name comes from Tupi and means blow, slap or strong kick.
The tree can be found in almost all of Brazil, especially in the Caatinga, Amazon, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. It also occurs in Bolivia and Paraguay. The fruit has a hard rind, but easy to open, a fine juicy and sweet pulp, in addition to a stone that occupies most of its content. The bark, when ripe, is brown and its pulp is white.
The pitomba measures approximately two centimeters in diameter, grows in bunches, is rich in vitamin C and can be consumed in nature or benefited in the manufacture of liquors or pulp. Several birds also have it on their menu.
The tree is widely cultivated in domestic orchards and blooms from August to October. The fruits ripen from January to March and are sold at fairs in the North and Northeast regions of the country. The seeds are considered anti-diarrheal and used as an astringent. Tea from the seeds is used to alleviate dehydration problems. On the other hand, leaf tea is indicated for "chair pains" and kidney problems.
