The cactuses stand out in the Caatinga landscape. These plants have leaves modified in the form of thorns and a green stem that carries out photosynthesis and is capable of storing a large amount of water.
Black torches are large, tree-sized cacti found in some cities in the interior of Bahia, close to the São Francisco River. Its flowers and fruits are born in a part of the cactus that looks like an orange plush pillow, full of hair and very soft.
The fruits of the blacksmith are eaten by bats from the Caatinga which, after feeding, fly far away and help to disperse the seeds.
This “orange pillow” helps protect the animal that leaves during the night, preventing it from hitting its snout against the cactus spines and hurting itself while eating the fruit. In addition, the orange hairs of cacti are used by hummingbirds to build colorful nests.
Many areas of the Caatinga are being deforested for the growth of cities and blacksmiths are running out of place to live!
