Herbaceous plant of the iridaceae family, whose scientific name is Crocus sativus, saffron has been used by man for millennia.
From its bulb (subterranean stalk in which oils and nutritive substances accumulate) the flowers with violet petals are directly born, whose lower part has the shape of a funnel. Stigmas are small filaments that make up the pistil, or female reproductive organ. Reddish in color, appear in the proportion of three for each flower. This is the part of the plant that is used as a spice.
