Dunes are elevations formed by the accumulation of sand carried by the wind. They appear in areas with large stretches of dry sand. As the dune grows, it becomes a greater obstacle to the wind itself, thus receiving and accumulating more sand.
Fauna and flora are scarce in the dunes. Few animals are adapted to life in this wind-conditioned environment. Among them are some insects and the tuco-tuco, a rodent that digs in the sand.
As for vegetation, grasses and low plants, such as flower vines, are common. These plants play an important role in setting the dunes: their roots often prevent the sand from being blown away by the wind.
