The thaumatroscope was one of the oldest and most popular animated toys. It is not known for sure when it was invented, but some historians believe it was in the early 19th century. It consists of a small disk attached to two cords on opposite sides. On each side of the disk, there is a different image. When the disc is rotated by the spectator's hands, the two images merge into one.
