What do camels and dromedaries carry on their humps?

A lot of people think that they carry water in their humps and that they work like ponds. But that's not true! The hump of a camelid is a kind of deposit of adipose tissue, that is, fat. They use this fat as an energy reserve. Up to 36 pounds of fat can be stored in a hump. Therefore, they are able to go long periods without drinking water. The dromedary survives by drinking water only once every 10 days. When given the opportunity, however, a thirsty dromedary can drink 135 liters of water in just 15 minutes.

If fed green, succulent vegetables, camels and camels can sustain themselves without the need to drink water. But with little water and very dry food, these animals become dehydrated and weakened. If they go too long without eating or drinking, the humps will decrease in size. They can even become flexible and fall to the side of the animal's body. As the animal hydrates and feeds, the hump returns to its upright position.
