Sequoias are large trees, which can reach over a hundred meters in height. Some are so famous for their size that they have been nicknamed, such as the Hyperion, which is 115 meters tall and is bigger than 19 giraffes stacked together. Another sequoia, nicknamed General Sherman, is one of the bulkiest trees on the planet. Its base, with more than 30 meters in circumference, supports a weight of more than 1,400 tons, that is, the equivalent of almost eight blue whales.
Sequoias are “relatives” to pines, that is, they belong to the group of gymnosperms, plants that have seeds, but no fruit (the word “gymnosperm” is of Greek origin and means “naked seed”, without protection). Gymnosperms also do not have flowers, in general the reproductive organs are located in cone-shaped structures called strobiles. Here in Brazil, pine cones are called pine cones and are used in Christmas decorations, for example.
In addition to being among the largest living organisms on the planet, these trees are also among the oldest. They can live from two to three thousand years. The age can be determined from the rings present on the trunks. The study of these rings also makes it possible to assess climate and fire histories, since fire also scars trees.
Three species of trees are popularly called sequoias: Sequoia sempervirens, known by the common name of redwood or coastal sequoia; Sequoiadendron giganteum, whose common names are giant sequoia or mammoth tree; and Metasequoia glyptostroboides, also called dawn sequoia.
