The answer is simple: because, swimming incessantly, the cubs move faster from shallow waters, close to land, where the risk of being devoured by other animals is very high.
Yeah, baby sea turtle life is not easy. The torture begins with the egg, which is usually the target of birds, other reptiles and, often, even humans. When the shell finally breaks, the turtle spends two to three days buried in the sand until its body is fully adapted to life outside. During this period, it feeds on a good part of the yolk, something similar to a “bag” that it carries attached to its body when it hatches.
Guess the time when baby sea turtles usually leave the sand for the first time? At night, of course, when most of the predators have retired. This scene is charming because the little turtles climb on top of each other, doing what could be compared to a tower or a ladder, until they reach the surface of the sand. There, they run together to the water.
In the water, they swim, swim, swim nonstop – an activity experts call “frenetic swimming” or “agitated swimming”. Depending on the species – believe me! –, this swimming can last from 24 to 72 hours. During this period, the calf's body will be nourished by the rest of the calf, also called a turtle's navel by people who live on the beach.
After completing the adventure routine of those first hours of life, the little turtle will spend its life at sea, where it will have to get food to grow, develop, reproduce and, one day, in the case of females, return to dry land to place your eggs.
