Do you know where the word Amazon comes from? From Amazonas, the name given by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana to the river he crossed in 1541. At the time, Orellana traveled along the river and claimed to have fought a group formed only by Indians. It is not known if this really happened, but the fact is that the Spaniard, when telling this story, compared the indigenous to the Amazons, women warriors who, according to legend, lived on the shores of the Black Sea, located between Europe and Asia. After the river, the name Amazonas baptized the region and, later, the state that was formed. Upon receiving the ending “ia”, he formed __ word that gives name __ forest: Amazon.
