Siberian, Indochinese, Bengal… you may have a favorite type of tiger, but do you know why they are different? Scientists have discovered, through fossils, that the ancestors of ancient tigers were spread across Asia about one million five hundred thousand years ago. They all had the same characteristics. At the end of the last Ice Age, when the Earth's climate changed, about 10 or 12 thousand years ago, they almost became extinct. When we talk about the scale of the age of the planet, this means that it has been a very short time since tigers gained varied characteristics. Humans already existed and began to paint in caves…
It was like this: a small population of survivors was probably concentrated in what is now China. From this region, the big cats spread again, migrating through the river valleys after their prey, usually wild pigs and deer. It turns out that on these trips, mainland tigers underwent subtle changes over many, many years in terms of size, coat, or stripe type.
These adaptations made their lives easier in environments as diverse as icy plains (where it is important to have very thick fur, for example) or tropical forests (where being smaller and more agile is worth more pity). Due to the great distances of the immense continent over which the tigers spread, the groups became isolated from each other and the differences remained or increased over time.
