With 4400km2, it is the largest saline lake in the West. Situated in Utah, USA, it is home to a large number of bird species. A railroad crosses the lake, dividing it into two parts – the southern and northern arms – and has a major impact on salinity. This also depends on the water level.
South of the railway bridge, cyanobacteria give the waters a greenish color. This region concentrates 35 to 45% of the world trade in brine shrimp (small crustaceans used to feed fish).
