The red panda or little panda (Ailurus fulgens), as its name implies, is a small mammal that can measure up to one meter and 20 centimeters (combining body and tail) and weigh six kilograms.
“It mainly lives in the dense temperate mountain forests of southern China and the far north of Myanmar, as well as in the eastern part of the Himalayas, which includes the mountains of Bhutan, northern Nepal and the extreme northeast of India. The species has solitary habits”, explains Fabio Oliveira do Nascimento, a specialist in mammals at the USP Museum of Zoology.
The red panda has a partially white face with reddish-brown markings below the eyes, fur reddish-brown over most of the body, black legs and ventral region, and a long, fluffy tail with alternating rings of reddish brown and yellow.
“Previously, the red panda has been classified in different families: as a member of the raccoon and coatis family (Procyonidae); with the weasels, otters and ferrets (Mustelidae); with the bears (Ursidae); and together with the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in a family of their own (Ailuropodidae). Currently the red panda is housed alone in its own family, Ailuridae, while the giant panda is part of the bear family (Ursidae)”, explains Nascimento.
Despite belonging to distinct families, pandas share similarities. Both have similar eating habits, with a predominantly bamboo-based diet. "In addition, there is also the presence of the 'false thumb', which is actually an extension of the wrist bone (sesamoid bone)", adds the specialist.
However, unlike the giant panda – which in 2016 managed to be reclassified as a “Vulnerable” species on the list of endangered species, the red panda is still in the “Endangered” (EN) category of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature”).
In captivity, the red panda usually breeds from January to mid-March, with a gestation period of between 114 and 145 days that, on average, results in the birth of two cubs. The species can live up to 14 years.
