What is red tide?

It is the proliferation of a type of algae, called a dinoflagellate, that lives in very deep parts of the sea. Certain marine conditions and the excess of organic substances in the water cause the rapid multiplication of this algae. It rises to the surface and releases toxic substances that leave the water with reddish stains.
