It lives in holes dug in the ground, hence the name buraqueira. These birds have good eyesight as their main feature. They can see up to 100 times more than a human being. Plus, they have great hearing. Small in size, the burrowing owl has a round head, white eyebrows, yellow eyes and long legs. The male is slightly larger and lighter than the female. During the day, this species sunbathes on tree branches or naps in its nest. The breeding season starts between March and April. The female lays an average of 6 to 11 eggs and incubation lasts from 28 to 30 days, being performed only by the female. When the pups are born, the responsibility for the offspring is of the males.
