One of the most consumed products today is alcohol gel. What few people know is that it was a woman who invented it. Practical and efficient in fighting viruses and bacteria, this version of the antiseptic was created in 1966.
A nursing student in Bakersfield, Calif., Lupe Hernandez had a concern: How could healthcare professionals sanitize their hands when they don't have access to soap and water? The solution was to create a gel version of the alcohol – as effective as the liquid, but portable and with less risk of starting a fire.
Despite the relevance of her invention, almost nothing is known about Lupe Hernandez. She is only cited in the book on nursing and professional leadership, “The Growth and Development of Nurse Leaders”, published in 2019. As noted by the site specializing in Latin American culture Remezcla, this is yet another case of a Latino woman left out of the official records of history.
Even so, it's important to see ___________ recognition, even if it's late, and to know that Lupe Hernandez is still contributing to saving lives and protecting healthcare professionals around the world.
