Because they cannot fly, most penguins live on islands and remote regions, seeking to distance themselves as far as possible from terrestrial predators. But if, on the one hand, they lack the ability to fly, on the other hand, they are very well adapted to marine life. Some species spend up to 75% of their lives at sea.
The penguin's body, by itself, already shows that it is a great swimmer: fusiform, that is, narrower in the extremities. than in the center, atrophied wings that perform the function of fins, waterproof feathers, and a robust and heavy. All these characteristics contribute when diving in search of food.
Despite spending a lot of time at sea, penguins do not breathe underwater and therefore need to constantly rise to the surface to breathe. That's why they don't usually dive too deep. Nor do they need to: most of the animals in their diet are in the upper layers of the ocean. Their diet is basically composed of small fish, crustaceans and other marine life.
About half of the penguins, when in the sea, do not go deeper than 10 meters, and the dive normally lasts about 20 to 30 seconds. If the need arises, however, large penguins can dive to much greater depths. The record is held by an Emperor Penguin who reached 535 meters. Amazing, no!!!
Penguins can swim at up to 14 km per hour, although they usually do not exceed half that speed.
