Before leaving for Portugal, Dom João VI emptied Banco do Brasil's coffers, taking almost all the gold to Portugal and leaving Dom Pedro as prince regent.
The Portuguese, however, did not like Dom Pedro's stay in Brazil, as they wanted Brazil to return to the position of Colony.
The Brazilians then drew up a document, signed by thousands of people, asking for their stay in Brazil. Dom Pedro was favorable to the request:
– As it is for the good of all and the general happiness of the nation, tell the people I will stay.
This declaration by Dom Pedro was made on January 9, 1822, a date that became known as the Day of Fico.
Days later, Dom Pedro formed his ministry, nominating José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva as minister of the Kingdom.
As threats from Portugal continued, Dom Pedro who had gone to control conflicts between Brazilians and Portuguese in the province of São Paulo, he announced, on the banks of the Ipiranga stream, in São Paulo, on September 7, 1822:
“Brazilians, the courts of Lisbon, want to enslave us. From now on, our relationships are broken. No ties unite us anymore, we are separated from Portugal.”
