“The Desert of the Tartars” is Dino Buzzati's masterpiece. Originally published in 1940, the book marked the author's consecration among the great names of Italian literature and was chosen by the specialized critics as one of the best books of the 20th century. The work tells the story of the young lieutenant Giovanni Drogo, who joyfully receives a mission in Fort Bastiani – for him, the first stage of a glorious career. Although he didn't intend to stay for long, the officer suddenly realizes that the years have passed while, almost without realizing it, he and his companions harbored the anticipation of a foreign invasion that never happens. Waiting for the enemy turns into waiting for a reason to live, the renunciation of youth and the mixture of fantasy and reality.
