The paleontologist and coordinator of the Museum of Paleontology of Marília (SP), William Nava, found a brood of fossilized eggs of carnivorous dinosaurs in Presidente Prudente, in the interior paulista. The discovery took place in late 2021 at the paleontological site of Parque dos Girassóis.
In the same place, in 2020, the researcher had already found fossilized crocodile eggs. The fossils found in 2021 are of small, carnivorous, theropod dinosaurs. The fossilized material is from the Late Cretaceous period and is between 60 million and 80 million years old.
While crocodile eggs have dimensions of 6 centimeters (cm) by 3.5 cm, found dinosaur eggs measure around 12 to 13 cm in length by 6 to 7 cm in width.
“Typically, fossilized crocodylomorph eggs have an outer shell with a porous or smooth texture. The eggshell of carnivorous dinosaurs has a texture in the form of ripples. They look like little wavy worms, which differs from the texture of the crocodilemorph,” said Nava.
According to the researcher, the eggs were found isolated from any other dinosaur trace, such as teeth or bones, making it difficult to identify the species. The eggs are still whole and haven't hatched, due to some unknown event that made it impossible for the hatchlings to be born.
“This is interesting data. Who knows if, in one of these five eggs, you don't have a fossilized embryo. It would be super cool, something unprecedented for Brazil”, highlighted the paleontologist.
Eggshell fragments will be sent to the University of Brasília (UnB) and there they will be analyzed with scanning electron microscopy.
