Blue Arara

Although the population is greatly reduced, the hyacinth macaw is found mainly in the Pantanal, where it occupies areas affected by humans, as well as the edges of mountain ranges. The species is among the most intelligent of the bird group.

The hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can reach up to one meter in total length (from the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail) and weigh up to 1.7 kg. It is also the largest species in the Psittacidae family. It has cobalt blue plumage, from head to tail, with the underside of the wing and tail feathers in black. The beak is large, massive, curved and black. The thick, black tongue draws attention to the yellow stripe on the sides.

Hyacinth macaws are social birds that live in families, flocks or groups. It is difficult to find them alone in the wild. Animal trafficking and habitat loss are the factors that most harm the species.
