What is the origin of the baton?

It is believed that the baton (a term of Italian origin that means “beat”, “compass”) was used in Europe in the Modern Age to mark the rhythm of music.

Before that, conductors made this marking with a roll of staves or by tapping a heavy pole on the floor.

The fame of the composer Beethoven, who had a baton, certainly contributed to the spread of the habit.

Its size varies between 15 and 25 centimeters and is currently made of light wood, celluloid or even plastic.
