THE DANGER DOES NOT LIVE IN DEFORESTATION AREAS ONLY. DENGUE, an INFECTIOUS FEELING DISEASE, CAUSED BY A VIRUS, IS TRANSMITTED BY THE AEDES AEGYPTI MOSQUITO, WHICH APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN ERADICICATED FROM BRAZIL AND OTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES. ACCELERATED URBANIZATION AND THE GOVERNMENT'S SLOWNESS TO RE-ESTABLISH EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE MEASURES ENDED UP FACILITATING THE RETURN OF THESE TRANSMITTERS. THIS WAS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THEY FOUND IDEAL CONDITIONS TO REPRODUCE ON TIRES AND JUMPER, BUT ALSO IN GARBAGE DEPOSITS AND CLEAN AND STILL WATER PLACES, WITH PLANTS AND CISTERNS, COMMON IN THE LARGE CITIES.
WITH A GREATER QUANTITY OF TRANSMITTING MOSQUITOES AND BREEDING ROOMS WHERE THEY CAN PLACE THE EGGS, THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE EXPOSED TO INFECTION HAS GROWN. DENGUE IS CURRENTLY THE MOST CONCERNING COMMUNICABLE DISEASE IN THE SOUTHEAST, WITH ALMOST 250 THOUSAND CASES REGISTERED IN RIO DE JANEIRO. WITH 174 DEATHS DURING THE YEAR 2008 AND THE THREAT OF EQUALLY ALARMING NUMBERS FOR 2009. THE FACT THAT THE DENGUE VIRUS IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES, WHICH CAN CAUSE BOTH THE CLASSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE DISEASE AND THE HEMORRHAGIC, MUCH MORE SERIOUS. AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF TYPE 2 IN THE RIO DE JANEIRO REGION IN 1991, IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE SYMPTOMS OF THE PATIENTS WERE AGGRAVATED AND, IN 2001, WITH THE TYPE 3 VIRUS EPIDEMIC, THE DISEASE WAS EVEN MORE SERIOUS. SEVEN YEARS LATER, WITH THE RETURN OF TYPE 2, THE LETHAL CASES ARISED FOR THOSE WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN INFECTED.
ACTUALLY, THE EMERGENCE OF DENGUE IS A RESULT OF MAN'S EXPANSION TO FOREST AREAS FOR MANY CENTURIES, PROBABLY IN AFRICA. "IN THE SILVESTRE MIDDLE, THE VIRUS WAS KEEPING UNDER CONTROL, BEING TRANSMITTED HARMFULLY BY INSECTS FOR MONKEYS THAT DO NOT DEVELOP THE DISEASE", EXPLAINS ANTHONY ÉRICO GUIMARÃES, RESEARCHER AT FIOCROSS. THESE INSECTS FOLLOWED MAN IN HIS MIGRATION AND PROBABLY ARRIVED IN BRAZIL WITH THE NEGREIROS OVER 100 YEARS AGO. ALSO BY SHIPS, THEY WERE TAKEN TO SOUTHEAST ASIA, SOUTH PACIFIC, CARIBBEAN ISLANDS AND OTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES.
