It is the fastest bird in the world, capable of reaching up to 320 kilometers per hour.
Migratory species, it comes from North America fleeing the winter. In Brazil, it appears between the months of October to April. There are records of migrations of up to 20 thousand kilometers.
Medium-sized bird, ranging from 38 to 53 centimeters in length. The female is larger than the male. The wings, pointed, have a wingspan between 89 and 119 centimeters.
The species is monogamous and solitary. In the breeding season, once a year, it lays three or four eggs on a cliff, directly on the ground, without making a nest. The eggs are incubated by the couple over the course of about a month.
It always tries to land in high places, from where it takes observation flights in search of prey. The most captured species is the domestic pigeon. Also flying mammals are part of the diet.
In the 1960s, the use of the pesticide DDT in agriculture contaminated many birds. By feeding on them, the hawks accumulated the poison in their bodies and this caused metabolism problems, including the weakening of the egg shell.
The reproduction of the species was compromised. With the ban on the use of DDT and conservation projects, the species began to recover.
