Mietta Santiago

Mietta Santiago was a woman who, at the beginning of the 20th century, fought hard for female participation in politics. She was born in 1903, in Varginha/MG, and was baptized as Maria Ernestina Carneiro Santiago Manso Pereira.

When she was 25 years old, already a lawyer, she filed a lawsuit so that she could vote herself for a federal deputy term. She was not elected, but became the first woman to vote and be voted in Brazil.

She founded the League of Voters from Minas Gerais and inspired the Republican Party of Rio Grande do Norte to launch the candidacy of Luiza Alzira Soriano Teixeira. This yes, she became the first woman to be elected to a mandate politician in Brazil, as mayor of the municipality of Lages/RN.

In addition to being a lawyer, Mietta was a writer. But it was another author, also from Minas Gerais Carlos Drummond de Andrade, who took it as inspiration for a poem […]

The Chamber recognized the importance of Mietta Santiago and prepared a decoration with her name for women who stood out in the defense of women's rights, the Mietta Santiago Medal. One of the winners was teacher Helley de Abreu Silva Batista, who died in the fire that occurred at the Gente Inocente day care center, in Janaúba (MG), in 2017, trying to save her students.
