Geppetto's house was just a small ground-floor room, which received light from a loft under a staircase. The furniture couldn't be simpler: a really bad chair, a bad bed, and a completely ruined table. On the far wall was a fireplace with a fire burning: but the fire was painted, and near the fire was painted a pan that boiled happily, letting out a cloud of smoke that looked like smoke from truth.
As soon as he entered the house, Geppetto took the tools and began carving and making his puppet.
– What name will I give you? - He told of himself to himself. – I want to call him Pinocchio. That name will bring you luck. I met an entire family of Pinocchios, Pinocchio the father, Pinocchio the mother, Pinocchio the children, and they all lived well. The richest of them begged for alms.
Having found the name for his puppet, he set to work hard and immediately did her hair, then her forehead, then her eyes.
With his eyes done, imagine his surprise when he realized they were moving and staring at him.
Geppetto, feeling himself being looked at by those two wooden eyes, was about to offend, and said in a resentful tone:
– Hard wooden eyes, why are you looking at me?
Nobody answered.
