Some animals – like the marmot – eat a lot and get fat before winter arrives. During hibernation, they consume these fat reserves. Others – like squirrels – store food in their burrow. During the winter, they only wake up to eat, defecate and urinate.
In addition to groundhogs and squirrels, many other animals also hibernate, such as hedgehogs and bats. Bears and beavers, on the other hand, although they also sleep a lot during the winter, do not go into true hibernation, as their vital functions do not decrease as much as those of other animals.
