The oldest Christmas symbol adopted in Brazil is the nativity scene, created by São Francisco de Assis in 1223. In Greccio, 65 km from Rome, the saint mounted a representation of the birth of Christ in clay, and the tradition spread throughout the Catholic world. The custom arrived in Brazil in the beginning of the 17th century (seventeenth). It was the Franciscan Gaspar de Santo Agostinho who set up the first nativity scene in Olinda, Pernambuco.
Between us, the nativity scene took on its own features. We can find cribs made of clay, wood, coconut husk, paper, corn husk, bone, cloth, iron, brick… Catholics usually assemble a crib in churches and at home, representing at least the Holy Family: Jesus' mother, Mary the father of Jesus, Joseph and the boy Jesus.
Nativity scenes are very popular in rural areas in the Northeast, Midwest, Minas and São Paulo. Vale do Paraíba is the region with the most tradition in the art of nativity scenes. To keep up with the demand, the artisans start production in September!
Some Brazilian artists have gained international fame with their nativity scenes. One of them was Mestre Vitalino (1909-1963), who was born in Caruaru, Pernambuco, never learned to read and only began to sign his works after he became famous. It is the greatest symbol of clay crafts in Brazil. His pieces are even at the Louvre Museum in Paris!
The Napolitano Nativity Scene has 1620 pieces and is one of the three largest examples of its kind in the world. It was built in the 18th (eighteenth) century by artisans from Naples, Italy. In the late 1940s, it came into the hands of businessman Ciccillo Matarazzo, who donated it to the city of São Paulo. The set is on display at the Museum of Sacred Art in São Paulo.
