A Ukraine has been leading a call to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competition after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in January it was open to including them as neutrals.
The city of Paris was chosen to host the 2024 Summer Olympics in September 2017 during an IOC meeting in Lima, Peru.
The Paris Games will be the first Summer Olympic Games held in Europe since the London 2012 Olympic Games.
“I can't imagine that they (IOC) make that decision. I can't imagine for a second that the IOC wants to leave such a legacy. So I will do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen," the mayor told French sports newspaper L'Equipe.
It is estimated that the event will receive the participation of more than 10,000 athletes from all over the world, who will compete in 33 different sports. Athletes from Russia and Belarus have been banned from several international competitions since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Hidalgo suggested that Russian athletes could participate in the Games as part of a refugee team, opposing Russian athletes participating as neutrals.
“We must act now. The fact that the IOC has chosen Paris for the celebration of these Olympics is a very strong signal because it is the capital of human rights”, she added, without mentioning the idea of the refugee team.
The Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11 next year. Organizers have repeatedly said they will abide by any IOC decision on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
